question about the scalpel

Why would they have security hold her in the room because a scalpel fell out of her pocket? Did I miss something?

reply

I think it might have been because she wasn't suppose to have it in that area (that's why she took it from the resident) and they thought she was going to hurt someone with it.

reply

That's a surgical instrument and can be lethal. Doctors don't just walk around the hospital with them

reply

Thanks to the OP and everyone else because I specifically came onto the board to find out what had fallen out of her pocket and why everyone was worried about it.

I am watching on my computer, and the screen is small, so with her desire to have a "private room" for her patient, I' had initially thought maybe it was a needle and she was a drug addict a-la Edie Falco's Nurse Jackie.

Recall that there were accusations of wielding the scalpel threateningly, a mention of reviewing security tapes, and the observation that Dr. James should've at least put the scalpel away more quickly (or something along those lines).

Presumably we didn't see everything--Dr. James must've picked up the scalpel while continuing to exhibit duress, and the bystanders felt either legitimately threatened or just fed up with her BS. The unresolved ambiguity is part of the humor.
