Worried For Sierra

My Personal Opinion Not Wanting To Start A Board War...
I am worried about how antagonistic Kyle has become towards her just because she did not reciprocate his advances. Yes, she went on a fishing trip with him, after he would not let her say no, but I think it was just a friendly trip and she had made it clear to him in earlier episodes that he was “a nice guy” not boyfriend material. I do not think she led him on. Now Kyle’s behavior and Kelley’s badgering are getting more belligerent each episode. She is a little out there, an innocent I think, and not an instigator. With every episode I feel more worried for her. Kyle’s reaction to her during the meal when he got physically annoyed at the way she was eating made me cringe.

I agree. Kyle's behavior and constant use of the f-word directed at Sierra is disturbing. I think he gets away with it because of his thick accent. He looks like he is one step away from outright lashing out at her. In most workplace environments Sierra would have grounds to file a complaint against Kyle and Kelley. She not only has to work with people that insult her and act hostile toward her, but she has to live amonst them too.

What was so wrong about looking for her lost walkie-talkie ? Most co-workers would step in and try to help find it, or at least reassure her that it wasn't hidden as part of the joke they were playing on Lauren. That whole scene was infuriating to watch.

So agree with you.

Kelley and Kyle are both way out of line in their continued belligerence toward her. They're both a pair of a-holes who can't deal with women who don't return their interest. In Kelley's case, he's trying -- and failing -- to act like things are copacetic.

In Kyle's case, I think it's obvious he's damaged goods and I also thought she was actually being placed at risk to have to be around his barely controlled hostile feelings toward her.

She may be a ditz, but she figured out instinctively that he is weird on toast. That kind of anger in this situation is a huge red flag that he is not wired right.

reply

In most workplace environments her attitude and laziness would have got her fired within seconds.

reply

I just don't see the laziness and attitude. I see a low level, inexperienced stew making a lot of rookie errors and getting flustered. It's a pretty low level position. Cleaning toilets? Laundry? It is a position someone takes either as the first, dues-paying step in the yachtie/hospitality biz, or because they are a drifter with limited skills and career options. It's also a make or break job. Either you suck it up, do the job and start building a career (Emily) or you get through a season and walk away from yachting forever (prob. Sierra). That is what that position will always be. Kate can hope for Emilys, but the reality is she will get more Sierras, Kats, Rockys.

You got it; they're little more than sea worthy waitresses and most are so inexperienced, they don't realize even if the job is menial, you have to do a good job regardless or you're deserving of "the sack!" Will Emily come back though? 

Doubt Emily will return to BD unless she and Ben sign up together. She and Ben do weekly vlogs on FB, and it looks like she is working for him on his catering gigs. She also said she is taking courses in nutrition at a Florida college.

I completely agree! Sierra has done nothing wrong. Before the fishing trip, everything she did was cute to Kyle. Since then, she can't win! There's absolutely nothing she can do that won't tick him off. He was gleeful when he got Kelly to fight with her. It was really weird watching his face turn into a little kid's face that was so happy to get another kid to join in on hating the kid he hates. Just as he's now picking apart Sierra, I found myself noticing negative things about him, too. I used to think he was cute and funny, but now I see him as spiteful with a rat's face and tiny shoulders. Sierra was just another conquest to him. If he had succeeded in winning her, he would have been on to the next shiny new girl or back and forth with an old flame.

I see people are totally overlooking her precipitous drop in expertise doing her menial job! If your boss has to go behind you to do it, Sierra needs to be called out! Why is this being set aside because she feels bullied? She leaves her radio anywhere and everywhere so she's on the $#!t list of the captain and Kate along with the others for her eccentric behavior of late! She's no innocent here! I don't particularly care for Kate, but I understand where she's coming from after being so nice initially! She's being taken advantage of so I have little sympathy for blondie!  

I see your point about her performance issues. However, if you recall from the first episode when Sierra missed her flight, she is a bit flighty. She can be diligent when focused, but tends to fly off when distracted. That said; I see her being bullied by some of the crew, not Kate as much. Kate is a manager that needs to keep control of her team [herding cats/babysitting kids}. As a child, I was sometimes bullied because my family was constantly being stationed in international cities. As the new kid, I was often a target until I asserted and defended myself. I can honestly tell you that during the bullying, my performance suffered because I was constantly on the alert/defense and was being ganged up on by instigators and their followers. Mean Clicks do exist. Also, let’s remember that we do not see every bit of footage, just what the producers want us to see to satisfy our curiosity and get us to tune in for the next episode. Sierra’s emotional level is obviously not as high or tough as Kyle’s or Kelley’s. Tensions on the Valor are high right now, they have gone through a lot and in such close quarters, they are feeding off each other's emotional triggers.

reply

I can relate to that! My family were nomads for a while due to dad in the service, then as a professional musician! When mom remarried to someone more stabilizing when I turned 14, things got a little better, but there are true a-holes out there that look for someone to pick on and I was rather small and took the brunt of their viciousness! It has little to do with personality, looks, or behavior for some to just single someone out! I didn't particularly care because I had little respect for them anyway, but I know the feeling! Sierra brings a lot of this on herself being so ditzy; leaving an iron on, forgetting her radio, and not exactly explaining her intentions with Kyle when he had one thing on his mind! I don't think she made anything that clear and was totally rude hanging on her phone when they went fishing! I'd be po'd as well, but would pretty much ignore her instead of getting in her face! She's not worth it! 

Sierra is not all sweetness and light. She showed her true colors when she dismissively called Kyle a queen. And she is always playing the 'I'm just a girl card'. Who cares what her gender is? She should act like a professional adult.

reply

Thank you! Most are commiserating with the b!tch! She's just going through the motions now and doesn't seem to care! IRL, I'd have her fk'n job with that derogatory and homophobic insult! People seem to have glossed over her behavior of late!  

Yes, straight out of Erich Bern's "Games People Play," the chapter called "Let's You and Him Fight," where someone doesn't have the guts to face the person they're mad at directly, so they get another person to act as their surrogate and set that person up to argue with the object of their dislike.

Really infantile, as was his obvious pleasure at instigating the quarrel between Sierra and that giant doofus and mental pygmy, Kelley.

reply

I agree. I started out liking Kyle a lot and even felt bad for him during the fishing trip when Sierra was on her phone not talking to him. But after finding out he had a significant other back at home and seeing the way he has been constantly attacking her and the language he is using is disgusting to me. Sierra may not be the brightest but she does not deserve to be ganged up on by Kyle and Kelly.

reply

I thought everyone was ganging up on Sierra; add Kate who has a real problem with her job performance! How soon we forget! 

I must have missed something but Kyle has a girlfriend, so why on earth is he harassing Sierra? What a creep!

reply

It amazes me that when a man calls out a woman out on her bullschitt it is suddely 'harrassment'. She's rude, self centered, self serving and passive-aggressive. Love Kyle.

reply

Yeah but didn't he have a girlfriend? Yet he was peeved when she had a boyfriend. It seems a bit weird.

To tell you the truth, I probably shouldn't have used the word harassment, since I haven't been watching enough of the show to see their interactions. It just seems funny that he was annoyed with something Sierra did when he did the same thing. Judging from others' posts on this thread, it does sound like he's harassing her a bit, too but I'm just going by them.

reply

It was weird that, as soon as she blew him off, he all of a sudden was in love with Ashley back home. I think they are both a little sketchy/dumb. They're both handling the situation poorly.

reply

The reason it looks weird is because the show is all about scripted drama. Why else has Kate been charged with beating and biting her ex-girlfriend Ro?

reply

Scripted dramas don't normally look weird.

reply

Agree that Sierra has her negatives - texting on the fishing trip, calling Kyle a "queen" and being generally spacey at her work. No doubt she handled the whole not-interested situation poorly, but she is not exactly equipped with much tact or wit. Kyle, however, had to accept it and move on, especially given the fact that he HAS A GIRLFRIEND BACK HOME! What hypocrisy! I am sick of hearing his excessive swearing and harping on about Sierra this, Sierra that. I liked the guy at first but not anymore. His jerky attitude came out as soon he lost his cool when Sierra suggested a group fishing trip. That was an obvious sign that she was friend-zoning him. Tough luck, accept it. To have a tantrum then turn venomous toward Sierra is excessive. I too was put off by his creepy, almost psychotic looking smile when Kelley was arguing with Sierra. I don't think she is arrogant either. First, Kate put her in a frenzy over the radio (tying it to her wrist? Really Kate?). Then she misunderstood the group joke on Lauren; panicked and started grabbing radios.

Kyle was trying to ignore her, but obviously Sierra wants to keep the feud going smirking his way, talking loud, and overall being an irritant! She knows exactly what she's doing so she shouldn't be "crying" harassment! 

Sierra did make it clear the fishing trip was a "friend" thing. Too f-ing bad if Kyle expected or wanted more. The horn dog bitched about her texting some at home.. Kyle had someone at home too. Someone he's seriously involved with. There was NO good reason for Kyle to be pissed off. Kelley should have shut that *beep* down and told Kyle to behave himself onboard. As bosun he has a responsibility to maintain a safe work environment for the crew. As does Kate. He failed Sierra. She was harassed at every turn by Kyle and Kelley to the point I was worried she would completely lose her nut! Those guys are lucky she didn't rat them out to Captain Lee.

reply

Wow; that's some view of the situation! Sister Sierra is totally innocent of all drama in your opinion! OK!  

reply

Nope, never said Sierra was innocent. What I said was the work environment onboard was not safe. Not that she would be murdered in her sleep kind of unsafe.. but having to endure coworkers aggressive, verbally abusive behavior kind of unsafe. It's complete bullsh*t that neither the chief stew or bosun reigned Kyle in.

reply

I saw it the same way as Suel.. Not saying Sierra was perfect by any means, but Kyle was vicious and relentless with his rude remarks, f-bombs and insults. I didn't want to hear that talk either. Even Capt. Lee curses too much imo. I know sailors are notorious for their cursing but this is a luxury yacht, and the crew should maintain a level of professionalism and class. I think there has to be an added level of respectful behavior because they share quarters too.

🐾

reply

Agree with you and Suel. Men who can't stand hearing "No, thanks" are tedious beyond words, i.e., Kelley and Kyle are cut out of the same cloth.
