What criteria do they use to cancel a show like this?

It's too bad that some humorless shortsighted executive who perhaps didn't get it has the power to cancel such a brilliant show. The subtle humor, the bizarre characters the sweet interchanges, (all without getting slapstickish or crude as so many shows that try play for the cheap laughs) will make this a classic whose life was cut short and thus sadly joining the fate of other such shows like Freaks and Geeks and Arrested Development. Whoever made the decision to cancel this show should be fired or demoted to work at Nickolodean where their abilities or lack thereof to understand incredible amazing humor may be better served.

Having just discovered this on Amazon Prime - I wholly agree with you. I want more!

Indeed. The premies have a reputation for giving series a chance, as in more than one season. FAMILY TREE was a singularly executed series. I fully expected it to return, if for only one more season. Whether it was canceled or if Chris O'Dowd was only available for a single season, it is a shame. HBO missed out on a chance to continue an Emmy-worthy project.
