Can anyone tell me the relevance of the thumping and what that was all about? What did the rocking chair have to do with anything?

If you have seen the first film, or know anything about the source material, it was explained.

The woman in black hanged herself, using that rocking chair (located in the child's play room upstairs then), which created the violent rocking. It was more prominent in the stage play.

No, I never saw the first movie (not offered on Netflix) nor did I read the source material. Now it makes more sense. Thank you. Regardless, it should have been shown in this movie through some flashbacks.

It's a good rule of thumb to watch sequels after watching the movies they are sequels to.
