Is It Just Me Or Is This Show Not That Good?

I didn't find this show very interesting or good at all. Ive been a fan of Michael since Family Ties, and his body of work is pretty damn good if you ask me. It would be so sad if his last hurrah was a pathetic cliche of a family sitcom, that is either canceled or drags out way to long.

If I wanted to watch Modern Family, I would watch Modern Family.

It's got funny bits in there. The supporting cast all seem good. It just doesn't mesh somehow. The whole pace seems off, the humor just doesn't flow.

And, yes, I keep getting distracted by Michael. I really don't want to be. It's good they worked his Parkinson's into the story, and I like that they can poke a little fun at it (the rolling chair incident during a newscast was one of the comic brilliant moments). But it does take me out of the story when it distracts me.

This won't be the last of MJF, he just has to find where he belongs in hollywood.

I saw the first two episodes and I thought they were alright but the tone was a bit off, is it supposed to be more funny or more dramatic? I don't hate it but they need to work out the tone more in future episodes.

I have an unbelievably long ignore list.

reply

I personally like the show.

Me too.

It's something I've kept watching out of optimism and hope it gets better, not because I've genuinely enjoyed it.

Even MJF doesn't really get any good material, so even his presence does little to offset the rest of the weaknesses.

I'm on the same boat with a lot of you. I don't watch TV religiously, but if I'm home on Thursday nights, I've kept trying this. I grew up on Family Ties and Back to the Future. I liked him for a bit on Spin City, and thought he did a really good turn on Scrubs. But this show - I agree...it's not bad, but the tone just seems off. I also admit I have to make it mentally past that atrocious opening. That song and "happy bouncy family" thing is awful. It made me wish I was on 72nd St that day so I could've tried to ruin the filming. ha.

I think show is so-so. It sounded like a great idea, but I don't like most everyone on it, and I need to.

Wow. It appears I have a much higher opinion of this show than others responding in this thread.

Personally, this show is about an 8.5/9 out of 10. The writing is good, the characters are interesting, and for me, the upbeat opening works.

This is one of my new favorites this season (along with The Blacklist).

The best shows deserve our loud and vocal praise, directed at those that can make a difference.

I have to agee with papablue and disagree with most of the rest. I absolutely love this show. It`s funny and doesn`t stoop to all of the crass/sex humor that most shows use today. Yes, family comedies have been done before, but really what hasn`t been done before? I laughed for almost the entire 20 mins (watched without comercials) Some light fun is welcome when usually all that is offered is doom, gloom, betrayal, and trash.

This show needs better writing. And I think a different format. There's practically no family chemistry in the cast. Scenes don't last long enough for us to absorb and the transition is too abrupt and every episode features a personal story of every character. And the dialogue is just artificial and doesn't feel real at all.

"You will pay the price for your lack of vision."

The show definitely has potential. The cast is good and seems to work well off eachother, even if their family chemistry leaves something to be desired. Michael J Fox is by far the best part of this show, as his comedic timing is pretty brilliant.

But overall the situations and jokes just aren't that funny. It really needs to get some better writing. And that opening is pretty cringeworthy.

reply

Agreed.

Michael J. Fox always has had good comedic timing. Honestly, he's the one actor that's holding the show together. Everything else seems a little disheveled.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

👆 my thoughts exactly.

I gave up after 6 episodes. I can't tell whether the supporting cast or the writing is bad. Kate Finneran is a good(NOT great) actress, but her talents are being wasted. THe wife is too bland and the kids annoy me. But I can't figure out if the way they deliver the lines is lame or the writing. Either way, I gave up.

You are a better man than me! I could only manage 5 episodes! Firstly ,just love Michael J Fox,read his books, etc. Hence really feel sad that he has gone ahead with this sitcom.
Sadly, I find it difficult to get over his shakes however much I tried. The writing is bland, the characters are unlikable and you really don't care what happens to them.On the other hand the serial which I was firm that I would not like at all, 'the Millers'. makes you care for each character. It has an outstanding supporting cast which I feel is what lacking in Michael's show.
Its never about one star, but great sitcoms have a terrific ensemble.Sad for Michael. He deserves better.
