Completely deserved what happened to her

Also a movie that shows very well what's wrong with glamorous America. A Xanax-filled, alcohol-gulping, greedy lying bunch. A great illustration from Woody.

pulled her out of school. She didn't even have enough maturity & self-confidence to finish educating herself.

THE CULT OF VICTIMIZATION HAS A WINNER HERE

I agree with you, but for different reasons. She trusted her untrustworthy husband and failed to protect her own interests, and that led to her downfall.

True, but I don't feel sorry for at all. Great performance by Cate Blanchett though.🐭

It was a great illustration from Woody.

BUT

Woody doesn't (want to) see what's wrong with any of this.

Agreed. Jasmine herself caused her downfall. When she called the FBI it meant that she knew more about her husband's shady dealings than she cared to admit. It was Jasmine's call to the FBI that altered her stepson's life. It was Jasmine's call to the FBI that robbed Ginger and Augie of their chance at the good life and of their marriage. It was Jasmine's call to the FBI that prompted her husband's suicide. It was Jasmine's call to the FBI that ultimately placed her on a bench in San Fran, wet haired and ragged, mutterning nonsense and scaring the street people. And Jasmine was not being an altruistic whistle blower when she made that call; rather, she was acting out of vengence and selfishness. The twit didn't even make an effort to ferret away a personal nest egg.

Jasmine is as much to blame for what happened to her as Hal though. She knew about his crooked dealings and his lechery, but turned a blind eye to it so long as she was getting what she wanted. When she didn't, she turned on him completely and destroyed him, his son, and herself. She was far worse to Hal than he was to her in the end, despite all of Hal's wrong-doings.

And when the chance came for her to turn over a new leaf, to take charge of her life and try to become her own woman, self-sufficient and productive, she instead attempted to become a trophy wife to a new man, lying to him about her past and tossing away her education and career for the sake of an empty and fairly meaningless existence. There are reasons that lead up to this decision for her of course, life was rough on her after her "fall from no-so grace" and at the first chance to escape that toughness she ran back towards what she was before.

That paints an ugly picture when I put it that way but she isn't all that bad, she's actually fairly middle-of-the-road and has many good qualities, but she isn't blameless and she's only a victim of herself in the end. Whether she deserves what happens to her or not is a matter of opinion, I don't think she did or didn't deserve it, it's what happened as a result of her choices. She's a tragic figure and one you can certainly feel sorry for, but she did bring a lot of it on herself.
