Overdose scene

At one point it shows an open bottle of drugs, hinting that someone had overdosed. Also at somepoint midway through the movie, the narrator states that the son did what the father did. I think the father had previously run his car off a bridge after drinking, when the son was young. The son subsequently committed suicide, and was not really there at all. The mother eventually killed herself with guilt. In her mind, she was trying to bring the son back. The entire family was doomed.

I'm pretty sure it was insinuated through all the newspaper clippings that the father killed himself when the child was young. It also seems that they were involved with a cult of some kind so was "let off the hook" for the suicide, which was communicated through the newspaper clippings as well. That's tuff incident that changed the child and made him stop believing.

After rewatching I see the bridge and how you may have possibly come to that conclusion. It never was quite clear about what happened to the father, and it's possible the newspaper clippings are referring to the mothers death and not the father's.
