7/10. Here's why / Esta es la razón:
CRYSTAL FAIRY AND THE MAGICAL CACTUS was a big risk. It’s a mix of 2 very different genres: Road movie (which always has the traditional beginning-middle-end structure) and slice-of-life movie (which usually tries to stay away from that structure). But you know what? It works. I know that when it’s not about the journey is about the destination and vice-versa, but in this movie, it’s not about either. It’s about the characters. Their interactions, their funny conversations and even their arguements over silly things. The 5 actors have good chemistry and they’re all good at ad-libbing. Yes, even the 3 Silvas, who aren’t really actors. They’re the brothers of writer/director Sebastián Silva. I’m glad this wasn’t just nepotism. Was the “This is my sad story which explains why I am the way I am” monologue necessary? Learning CRYSTAL FAIRY was raped ruins the ambiguety of the character. On the other hand, it helped me to undestand the ending. You see, JAMIE was a foreigner too but he was living with CHAMPA. We don’t know how she came to Chile or where she was living. She’s the typical hippie drifter. She started to bond with the guys, so she felt it was time to go. I think her rape caused those commitment issues.

CRYSTAL FAIRY Y EL CACTUS MÁGICO fue un gran riesgo. Es una mezcla de 2 géneros muy distintos: Película de vieja (la cual siempre tiene la tradicional estructura de comienzo-medio-final) y película trozo-de-vida (la cual normalmente trata de alejarse de esa estructura). ¿Pero saben qué? Funciona. Sé que cuando no se trata del viaje se trata de la meta y viceversa, pero en esta película, no se trata de ninguno de esos. Se trata de los personajes. Sus interacciones, sus conversaciones chistosas e incluso sus discusiones sobre tonterías. Los 5 actores tienen buena química y todos son muy buenos al improvisar. Sí, incluso los 3 Silvas, que no son realmente actores. Son los hermanos del guionista/director Sebastián Silva. Me alegra que no fuera solo nepotismo. ¿Era necesario el monólogo «Esta es mi historia triste que explica el porqué soy como soy»? Descubrir que a CRYSTAL FAIRY la violaron arruina la ambigüedad del personaje. Por otro lado, me ayudó a entender el final. Verán, JAMIE también era un extranjero pero vivía con CHAMPA. No sabemos cómo ella llegó a Chile o dónde estaba viviendo. Ella es la típica hippie nómada. Ella empezó a conectarse con los chicos, así que sintió que era hora de irse. Creo que su violación causó esos problemas de compromiso.
