The film's big mistake

Personally, it really bothered me that Gaby Hoffman's final monologue was chopped up with reaction shots of everyone around her. The writing and story she was telling was so involving that I think it should've been done in one shot that showcases her great performance. Instead of cuts, perhaps moves closer to her face and outwards. Every time the director cut away to how the others were feeling it distracted me and took me out of the moment.

What do you guys think?

I agree, they should have focused on her at that moment instead of panning over into darkness

I think the reasoning behind the reactionary shots was because of the way she just kinda dropped it on them. Instead of them being shocked, they were all on the same wavelength, and even Cera's character was very understanding, to the point that it brought him to tears. I don't think the purpose of that scene was to showcase Hoffman. The rest of the movie did a fine enough job doing that. I think that scene was more about the groups emotional connection, therefor, the reactionary shots.

However, I understand why you'd be less than thrilled because everyone was in a drug induced zen like trance, so their expressions were/and should be pretty blank. You could see some hints of them, especially the youngest brother trying to put on a strong face to support her though.

I think the whole point of the scene was that the San Pedro bought out all of their true characters, when Crystal reveals that she was raped at a party and Jamie starts crying, you see everyones true colors, in the end behind the exterior of the crystal fairy was a human being, compared to when Jamie says that she is quite the "character" in reference to her outlandish personality. Its on this level where they all connect and consequently treat each other more respectfully the next day, thus why the cuts were used.

I think they did showed everyone else's reactions because they are the ones getting something out of her revealing her story. Yea, she let people in on her secret but she didn't need to. She was already confident and open and already was the person she was meant to be. She wasn't benefiting from that like the guys were. They benefited by seeing what a strong, trusting spirit was made of and why she was the way she was, and that they were wrong for judging her and that judging people in General is ignorant.

Funny you say that. I felt that the big mistake was to have that scene. The obligatory "This is my sad back story that explains why I am this way" monologue ruined the ambiguety of the character.

I don't think explaining Crystal's persona was the point of the scene. The way it illustrated Jamie's transformation was a pretty big deal, in my opinion.
