The whole Irishness thing in US


How come the Irish make such a huge deal out being Irish. It appears to me it's because they weren't the educated Irish who arrived in US and they're very rural people, therefore multiculturalism doesn't fit their world views. The starred and striped mixing pot has so many nationalities - Germans, English, Dutch, Swedes didn't make such a huge issue out of their heritage or at least aren't as loud.
Just looking at it from Europe...

I think you are forgetting about the Italians. They are huge on being Italian. Always talking about the "old country" and so forth. So it is not like the Irish are the only ones who celebrate where they come from.

Hispanics, as well. They like their food, their traditions, their flag, etc...

Typical Celt mentality unfortunately (I'm celtic too btw).. when they're in their home country they dream endlessly of leaving and once they're gone they dream of going back to where they came from.
