I've met Jody, but...

Well,

She did appear nice in her store, the Glass House, and I was fortunate enough to MEET one of the housewives, who then graciously gave me a bottle of wine from Ronnie's defunct line of liquor, but..

I know that reality shows probably look for people with "outrageous" personalities to put on their shows (i.e. Lisa Lampenelli on Celebrity Apprentice, Elise on Hell's Kitchen), but why do people feel sorry for Mary and vilify Jody? I guess a better question is, "Why do people treat this as if this is all real?"

When I met Jody, I was prepared to tell her off for being mean to Mary, but then I thought "why am I so involved in this? Why should I care about some rich b*tches?" Anyway, Jody went on and on, and gossiped CONTINUOUSLY about the other women "they have a lot of problems," she said. She still came off as a b*tch.

I'm wondering really, just how much we're seeing is real, and how much is fake?

That being said, I told Mary this on Facebook, and well, she's kind of a b*tch too. I don't think that any of them are that nice, really. But I'm honestly wondering how much of this is scripted, and how much of this is real? I'm guessing 50/50? But it's so contrived! I mean, they're not related at all, so why should anyone feel bad for "poor Mary" who probably gets paid thousands to be on a cheaply produced "reality" show and play the victim? People feel bad for the woman, but hell, she's rich and no one is forcing any of them to be on the show, and it's not like RHONJ, where they're all family, so no one is putting a gun to their heads to force them to interact, and worst of all, the drama isn't nearly as fun as it is on RHONJ. I'm thinking that they're all b*tches, and hell, with their money, why should anyone feel bad for them?

How much of this is real, and how much of this show do you think is fake?

reply

I think it's better to feel sorry for someone than to assume they're a b*tch just cuz they're rich or female or whatever. I think that term is applied wayyy too liberally to women, and I've had it applied to me just for displeasing people and not doing what they want (e.g. not agreeing with them or not wanting to go out with them.)

If it's scripted, then someone ought to tell Jody, because she's going beyond the call of duty and continuing on bashing Mary on twitter. And I don't think anyone in their right mind would agree to look so badly on TV if they didn't actually feel that way.

If someone wants to represent themselves as being a bully, whether planned or not, I think it's fair to judge them. Either way, they're a creep and they're setting a bad example for their daughters and the young girls watching the show.

As for the amount that's fake, I think the group meetings are engineered and they force the women to be together at these events. The restaurants are probably picked by the producing company because I think they need permission from the owners to set up their cams there. The talking head sections are obviously prompted with questions and then inserted with editing. But I don't think the lines are scripted.

I totally agree with this! These woman just constantly want to stay in the public eye and continue with their awful behaviour.

reply

Well if there was no drama, no one would watch. So at the end of the day the public is to blame.

reply

The public is not to blame for their constant outlandish behaviour; they are. Yes dramatic things happen within a show, but pushing it past that is trying to much.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I agree that we are not to blame for their behaviour. However, we are the ones that are watching it, commenting on it, and the internet is booming with this crap. Who makes this happen? We do! If everyone ignored it, didn't watch it, didn't comment on facebook etc, didn't twit about it, or make blogs about it then this show would die a quick death.

I'm just as guilty for buying into it, but lets face it. This crap wouldn't be on TV if we all weren't watching it and then reacting to it.

reply

There is a market for these sort of shows so yes in a way we are apart of the problem for watching it as entertainment (something I own up to) but at the same time we don't cause Jody's nasty ways. She chooses to be a villan and mean. However she probably perpetuates this nasty behaviour, supplying it because lets not fool ourselves into thinking there is no demand for it.

The problem isn't that she's rich, it's that she's dumb enough to put herself in situations where she gets bullied. Assuming that she really did invite Amanda to her birthday party, why the hell would you do that when she told you to *beep* off?

Having said that, Jody comes off like a crazy b*tch.

reply

Because she correctly observed that Amanda is just a follower and Jody is the ringleader, and she thought that maybe Jody has poisoned Amanda by telling her stuff, and Amanda will be able to see that she's not actually like what they say about her. What she didn't realise is that Amanda is just an awful person too.

I don't think that means Mary is stupid. It's just that she believes that people are inherently good and that's kind of idealistic and naive.

I'd really like to see your interaction with Mary on facebook. Could you link me to it, please?

The majority of the show is fake. The meetings between the women are planned and interactions & conflicts encouraged. For some odd reason though, it seems Slice/Lark Productions didn't put too much effort into this season in comparison to the first. This season doesn't have much of a plot and most of the women's behavior seems to be all over the place with no real explanation (it's to the point that nothing aired on television makes sense). But it's more reason why the Vancouver Housewives shouldn't be taken seriously and why I don't feel badly for anyone signing up to be on the show.

I can PM you about it..

I also think that I"m being too hard on Mary. I think I just really want to believe that this is scripted more than it is.

Having said that, you kind of know what you're getting yourself onto on this type of show. Mary might actually be the first housewife (in the entire series of all Housewives), who is too good for this type of show.

I think she should find a new way to promote herself.

I also have pics of the Glass store which I can put up in this thread when I get a chance. It's really not as big as the show makes it seem. No one was in the store when I walked in.

Jody is beyond vile. However she may feel about Mary, saying things casually about Mary being a piece of sh!t, wanting her to die, etc...so inexcusable. I feel bad for her son and younger daughter/granddaughter who actually seem like nice people.

Would you PM me about Mary as well???

Basically the show is based on real people (this is ALL reality shows), its not scripted however it is micro-managed. So for example if 2 people have had a falling out the show asks one of the people involved in the arguement where she wants to film on say Monday, then the producers go to the other person involved in the arguement and tell them they want to film them at the same place same time, hence they make sure an arguement will go down and film the whole thing. Most of what you see is very much exagerated and relationships i.e new boyfriends or dates are often set up to add some entertainment value. The more drama a reality show has the more people will watch. In reality most of the people we see on the show would probably never hang out as the show is basically a job to them. Their being paid to entertain. It's likely the majority of the housewives are b itches in real life you just don't know. But never take the show too seriously or get too invested in the characters where by you would have a go at one of the housewives if you saw them...even though its very easily done! It's micro-managed, manipulated, exagerated reality :) best way to describe it. I think the only REAL reality show I have ever watched was Betheny Frankels spin off show because it literally followed her in her day to day life through her therapy sessions where she opened up about personal stuff, and just everyday normal stuff. I really enjoyed that, she was basically herself the whole time.

None of the women on this show appeal to me in the least. They all strike me as narcissists and the show itself is, to me, another example if the culture of narcissism that Dr Drew Pinsky's book, The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism Is Endangering Our Families--and How to Save Them, details.

I've been doing a media studies class and got cornered into writing my paper on RHOV. I thought I'd add something to the debate about whether the show is scripted. While not every word or even most of the words these women say is scripted in the sense of a writer setting down what they are too say, the show and all reality tv is shaped into a story by editors.

This clip from a UK show that keeps a critical eye on tv explains how advances in editing have made reality tv possible and how easily manipulated it is.

Also, a small example from the show (as pointed out on Twitter by a fan). In the last show when Ioulia is supposedly making light of Amanda mistakenly havinv a drink of alcohol, Ioulia stands up to leave and Ronnie calls her a bitch. If you pay attention to the continuity, Ronnie is not holding anything in her hands, cut back to her supposedly calling Ioulia a bitch and there's a glass in her hand. No way to know if the comment was actually directed at Ioulia.

There is even a term in the industry for this: "Frankenediting," or editing bits and unrelated pieces together to make your monster.

I really appreciated karentravels81's comment about asking herself why she is so involved with these women. My answer: because the audience is being manipulated horribly, and perhaps the worst manipulation is confusing us all about what is real. After all "real" makes it far more compelling than a clearly fictional soap opera.

If people are getting enjoyment out of watching the show, what does it matter if it is real or fake or somewhere in between the two??

At the end of the day, these women signed up for a show to provide ENTERTAINMENT.

I've never actually considered this dreck entertaining. I wouldn't have liked Victorian freak shows either.

reply

Obviously it matters to some of us, hence the reason why the question was asked and why people shared their responses.

Yeah, the show was created for entertainment but more than likely these women signed up to have a platform to sell their products and build their brand, just like most other reality shows.
