Had me wondering about the terms 'impressionistic' and 'expressionistic'

Not that I understand the meaning of either of those two terms too well.

But this movie throughout felt like a wonderful form of impressionistic observation of an important chapter in Lila's life--until the very last scene, when it suddenly felt like it was offering an expressionistic release for the audience.

Maybe the director intended that.

Anybody else struck with the same reaction?

I'm not sure what those terms mean either other than they seem closely related and perhaps a tad bit pedantic.

I saw the film last May at the Maryland Film Festival and this is part of what I said in my review.

"It felt like love is a wonderful picture about an uncomfortable time. Lila digs herself deeper and deeper into uncomfortable situations and the director expertly draws the audience into that uneasiness."

"'It Felt Like Love' is a tender, wonderful yet at times emotionally wrought piece about things we all must learn in order to grow up."

I think it's difficult to throw around those terms without defining them first. Could you use different terms than impressionism and expressionism or define them in your own words? (regardless if they're the "correct" definitions or not)

Personally, I find the film's cinematography incredibly impressionistic, but again I don't think that's what you're getting at.

How about "handwavy"? Common style for dilettante lady directors, literally implemented in this case
