This is why ratings are ridiculous
Rating this movie a 1 is completely acceptable. Rating it a 10 is, as well. I gave it an 8 for no other reason than I will most likely never watch any part of it again. Was I disgusted? Not in the least. Was I confused? For every second of the film, until a specific moment, where the main character changes. Was I bored? Terribly. Could I look away? Not in a million years. Did I miss things throughout that made me miss key plot points? Not really, because, much like an earlier Russian film, Stalker, it's all pretty much the journey to get to the finale.
When the movie finished I gave it two stars out of five on another site. Two hours later, I gave it three. This morning, I gave it four. It will probably hover around 4-5 for the next week. Unlike a movie like Bela Tarr's The Turin Horse, I won't be as affected by this, but it will stay with me. Is it the masterpiece some are calling it? Probably. Will I ever view it as one of the great movies of all-time? Doubtful. Finally, would I recommend it? To about three people.
