I just happened to turn on the TV and the commercial was playing. I started freaking out because Jill Scott, Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard AND Phylicia Rashad were all in the same commercial. Then i saw it was for Steel Magnolias, a film I've never seen and a play I've never read. I welcome the remake with fresh faces for a new audience. I am usually not into these extreme female hormone infused films, I usually get cramps watching them lol But i want to see this just to see my favorite Actresses and Singers together.

Exactly what is that suppose to mean?

Does that mean that Casablanca should be remade? Or All About Eve? From what I understand the dialogue in Steel Magnolias hasn't changed. They just have Black actors in place of the original cast.

Exactly what it sounds like. I would see this movie because the actors attract me to it. I'm not saying it will be any better. Hey, this may even lead me into seeing the original. It's opening new doors for me. Not everyone has seen the original to EVERY current re-make movie.
The idea of the remake is to first, make money. Secondly, to introduce a new audience (usually the younger generation, [insert list here], etc) to the material. If I see a remake and it's terrible, I usually will go see the original (if the argument is that it was amazing).
Just because the dialogue is the same doesn't mean it will be acted or directed the same.

You've really missed out and its a shame your first exposure to this classic is by this remake. Here's a tip: Go watch Sally Field's epic performance in Steel Magnolias (1989) and tell me how you think Queen Latifah will be able to do that character justice.

It is, indeed, a deep shame. I saw the play when it first came out, and then saw the movie years later, when it was made (and had severe reservations of it). To remake this movie at all, and with a black cast on top of it, is a mistake. I just cannot picture Latifah as M'Lynn. I thought she was going to play Truvy. I think she would have made a better Truvy. I don't see her giving as strong of a performance as Sally Field did.

As for someone else playing Roberts' role? I'm indifferent. I am not a big fan of Roberts, and I really wasn't thrilled with her portrayal of Shelby.

Everyone else, however, in the original movie version, was perfectly cast.

I have faith in The Queen. She is one of my role models (YES! She is!). Additionally, Sally Field is an extraordinary actress; This will just be another actors take on same character.
I still think I'm going to watch this one first(then read the play, then watch the original) because I may end up writing a paper on it :)

While I am interested in this, I'd definitely check out the original also. I think it's great to compare past and present versions of a film :)

Like Anna Karenina, I read the book years ago and watched the old version from 1948 with Vivien Leigh. Now it's being remade with Kiera Knightly and I want to see it to compare :)

I LOVE watching old movies- and when I say old, I mean anywhere from 1930s to 1980s :) The much older movies, from the 30s to the 50s, have such a grand look to them, I think you are missing out if you don't watch the old movies now and then. :)

Joy Luck Club is another movie from the 80s that I enjoy :)

When you are deconstructing a film for a Film and Theatre class than this option makes perfect sense. What else are we supposed to write about?

Heard of the original movie, never watched it. After this movie, I have 1989's version in my Netflix Instant queue. Have to watch it. It was such a sad movie.
