That was my mistake while watching this version is that I kept getting images of the actresses from the 89 movie in my head. Forgetting that this is totally a new version made from Robert Harlings original script. I personally loved this version and glad they decided to do it.
It's hard not to compare it when they are usually pretty much the same script word for word. Save for a few little changes in dialouge and major changes in scenes, it is clearly a remake and an awful one at that.
What major changes in scenes? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The I want to hit someone scene from the original was at the cemetery right after burying Shelby. It was more emotional there, I thought. And the hit her scene worked much better here because they were in public just after burying Shelby. And then Clarie and Ouisa carried their little tiff to the house at the repasse (and I missed the line "you are evil and must be destroyed from Ouisa to Clarie)where Clarie had to basically goad Ouisa to talk to her, and then they fought on the bench. much better presentation in the original.
Other than that I didn't really see any differences at all.
I see. For me, the transition from everything happening at the beauty shop to the cemetary was a bit strange for me when the movie originally came out. So, I'm thinking the original writer wanted to put it back where it was in the play, or they did it to save money.
Well Gemeni x, I'm sorry youve never seen the 89 version, you really should go by blockbuster and rent it sometime. But since you have seen the 2012 version, and you know whats what witht he story, this is the scene that everyones been talking about, the end scene. I found a youtube clip of the 89 Sally Field/ Malynn's outburst funeral scene... After you watch this, you will understand
I agree about Kimberly Elise, she would have made a really good Malynn, and she probably could have delivered this scene with as much emotion as Sally Field

You are absolutely correct. Kimberly Elise would have been perfect to play M'Lynn.
I really likes this version as well. Im seeing that most of the people hating on this are fans of the original or havent seen the film period. For a TV movie it had a great cast and was well made. I havent seen the original as an adult (cant even remember the film) and therefor didnt have anything to compare it to.
what else are we to do when the same jokes/quips are said word for word? scratch his watch or wind his butt? most of them didn't make any sense nowadays.
