The movie is based on the "Lotus Caves" by John Christopher and is a juvenile sci-fi story about two teenaged boys, raised in a Lunar colony, who become so bored with their dull and monotonous lives that they "borrow" a vehicle and set out on a joy ride. They go to the abandoned site of the first Lunar station and discover a notebook left by one of the crewmen who went missing. The crewmember told of something strange that he had seen and wanted to investigate. He disappeared and was never heard from again. The boys decide to go in search of it, drive over a fissure, fall in, and find themselves in a cave that is part of a series of air-filled caverns. The missing crewmember is still alive and is living with a large and intelligent plant that has created an Eden under the Moon's surface. The boys are fascinated but later they change their minds about their situation. From the description of High Moon, there is very little that it has in common with the source material which is really no surprise seeing that a lot of movies based on books are different from the literature.
