I look on SyFy's offerings as the direct descendants of the B-movies that were the standard fare on UHF stations all around the country, shown on monster movie shows. In Philly, we had Doctor Shock on Saturday afternoons. He'd show horror and monster movies, some of which were classics (eg, "Godzilla", "Frankenstein", "A Bucket of Blood"), but most were just bad ("The Giant Gila Monster", for example). At the commercial breaks, he'd do bad magic tricks and tell jokes that went back to vaudeville. But when I was a kid, I loved spending Saturday afternoon watching his show.
That staple of local UHF TV was parodied on SCTV by Joe Flaherty as Count Floyd, hosting "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre". I loved that gag, because it was spot-on.
And that's what SyFy's crappy movies remind me of. So bad, they're entertaining.
