Say what you want about this movie, but you gotta admit...

... it's better at parodying than most modern spoofs. You know why? Because it actually parodies. It doesn't recreate popular scenes to celebrate them; it makes fun of clichés, plot holes and silly elements.

Yo, Jason Friendberg & Aaron Seltzer! A Disney movie beated you!

Another thing it doesn't do: throw in copious amounts of profanity, gross out humor, and over-the-top sexual content, which seems to be what passes for "parody" these days.

I saw it when it premiered with my niece and we loved the songs. I'm trying to get her to watch an Annette and Frankie beach movie, but she's still resisting.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

reply

Agreed! That's why I hated all of those Scary movie parodies! Parodies were much better during the time of Hot Shots and The Naked Gun.

This is probably a stupid question, but whatever. What all did this movie parody? West Side Story and 60's beach movies, obviously, but was there anything else? I watched part of the film while babysitting the other day and one of the songs reminded me of "The Nicest Kids in Town" from Hairspray and I didn't know if that was intentional or not.

I go to seek a great perhaps.

Well, the villains looked like they came out of a 007 movie.

Was Dr. Fusion supposed to be like some of Vincent Price's comedic roles? Somehow he reminded me of that.

reply

I was about to say that reference would be too obscure for younger viewers... but then I realized that so would the old teen beach movies.

Vincent Price did a beach movie mad scientist:
Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, 1965.
