Harmonica at the End (spoiler)

So I make the assumption that the main character takes his own life ... then when the credits start to role you hear someone playing with a harmonica. Not playing a set tune but constructing a tune ... which made me wonder ... did he actually shot himself. I guess he did but that was a little confusing Mr Director.
