Spoiler. Why did the twins

have to separate from their dad or from each other? it contributes nothing to their survival.

Plus, wasn't the war over towards the end of the film, like the twins said?

The answers to those questions can be found in the novel's sequels: "The Proof" and "The Third Lie". I won't spoil it for you; if you happened to like the story then I would recommend you to read the novels, especially the sequels.

I have just finished watching the movie, knowing it was based on a book but unaware that the book was part of a trilogy. Thanks! I've just ordered the books and looking forward to reading them.

I have not read the trilogy but my impression was that they wanted to flee from
the post war communist regime in Hungary. As you saw in the movie this was very
dangerous and only the one with the notebook made it. The father was killed and
the twin brother decided not to risk his life especially since his brother had
the notebook and would be able to tell their story to the West. Would anyone who has read the books confirm or deny what I wrote.

reply

From what I recall, the exact reasons behind why one wanted to stay behind while the other fled are just as vague in the novel. The twins just describe the moment the instant it happened. Indeed, the fact that the one with the notebook had to flee to tell the story was just one part of the facts that caused their splitting-up; the other motives are either elaborated on with the sequels or mostly left to the readers' imagination. My interpretation is that it was time for them to stop working together and become stronger as separate persons (and that shows in the first sequel, "The Proof", with a price...). That's all I can tell you. You can find the rest in the novels (I'd love to spoil it for you, but it they really are worth the read).

reply

I felt that they separated because staying together would make the dependent on each other. Remember what happen when they were in the he jail. They could not stand bejng separated. They had to separate to continue their training of hardening themselves.

I just saw the movie and I had the very same question as sagih... After demonstrating during the entire movie how dependent the twins were on each other, as well as vital for each other's survival, I couldn't understand why they decided to separate.

Having read the comments posted here made it clearer for me. I was unaware that this book was only the first of a trilogy. May have to check out the other books now.

Well, the book explains these kind of question and I can tell you'll never guess what was all about. The story the three books tells is brutal, as it was defined by many readers.

If you have the chance, you could read the books, you'll find a story about war, post war, and afterwards.

Why do the twins decide to stay with their Grandmother instead of going with their Mom??
Was the baby girl a step sister to them?
