The Ending (spoiler)

Was he flipping a coin to see if he should shoot himself? Or just to see what the answer would be?

reply

I was wondering the same thing.

Sort of ... it was supposed to be Russian Roulette (didn't you see him, Oscar's character, dump the 6 bullets onto the tabel?). Garret's character chose tails, so if it came up tails, he was to put the gun to his head a pull the trigger first.

HOWEVER, as was revealed, Oscar's character really had the chamber FULL of bullets. And as he said with one of his last dying breaths, something to the effect of, "I was never going to let you have the gun. I was going to pick it up to hand it to you and shoot you in the face."

Meaning if it was tales, he was going to act like he was handing the gun to him so he could play RR, but he actually was never planning to let Garret's character have possession of the gun. And if it came up heads, he was going to pretend to "play RR" himself, but do the same thing ... one can assume.

Hope that helps.

But after all that he tossed the coin. Why did he toss it at the end, after shooting the other guy?

reply

Oh, sorry ... you're talking about the VERY END, where he has the single bullet and the coin? Right ... I think that it was left a little ambiguous, as to be open to interpretation. But I think it was just a reflection on himself and what he had been through. He MAY have been flipping it to see what it had been, but I don't think there would be any (self) repercussions of that flip.

Maybe to decide whether to turn himself in to the police, or not?

He certainly wasn't happy about his life and the scene before that, with his kid, suggested that maybe his kid was the only beacon of hope to happiness. But for true happiness he'd need to rid himself of the guilt. Hence...the decision moment?

reply

I say the latter. After we see him holding his daughter, there's no chance he was suicidal at the end of the movie. (Though he's still not a happy-go-lucky kind of guy.)
