NOBODY GETS OLD SCHOOL ANYMORE

In this age of mass media induced ADD it seems many people lost the ability to take in a film without instant gratification, and then label it as a poor film. If this film had been made in the 70s it would have won a few academy awards or at least nominations. Yet because of the evolution of common film, roots thrillers like these are chucked away by the masses as garbage or inferior. Just because something doesn't mesh with today's filmmaking doesn't make it bad. Yes film is a matter of taste and opinion, but some people should learn about film and expand thier knowledge base and hopefully thier minds and then revisit some of the so called garbage. You might be surprised. While this was not a masterpiece it is certainly a well crafted film and pays good homage to many classics of the 60s and 70s and a few 80s films. Sometimes it is all about context and the mind can see things differently and appreciate the good.

I agree. One the only problems this film had was the fact that it was so obviously cut down to a 90 minute film while it should probably have been around 120 in order to tell the proper story.

Sorry but the acting here is laughable, thought i was watching a spoof. And its my favourite genre and pace...

It was fine, I don't know about Academy Award winning but that's never been a real indicator of quality anyways. I didn't personally see it as a cinematic throwback, but I suppose I can see parallels with films like Easy Rider or Two Lane Blacktop.

That said, the bone I had to pick with Mojave was the large gap in writing, direction, and thus acting performance between the two leads. Granted, bad guys are more fun to play and write for, but that doesn't mean we should forgive a lackluster protagonist.

Our anti-hero was generically handsome, a wealthy rockstar, a father, with a sexy young girlfriend. He is apparently experiencing an existential crisis, we are told, and by the film's end has seen the value of his own humanity, perhaps? Who effing knows -- none of this is communicated by his character, only his blue eyes and pretty beard saying "I am sensitive and rugged, or something."

Why do we care about him? We don't. What has he lost by the story's end? Nothing. Does this experience change him as a lover, father, or celebrity? No, he's still an unrepentant douchebag who has murdered two people.

I soured on the movie, by the end. The "bad guy" was overwritten to the extent that the "good guy" was severely underwritten.

Not a bad review but you started out by saying, "it's fine." Well, not by your review it wasn't. So which is it?

Perhaps you are experiencing your own existential crisis...

Helpful comment, thanks.

Absolutely correct; it was nothing.

You're not a grown up, are you?

*yawn* keep it coming.

No, he's still an unrepentant douchebag who has murdered two people.

He didn't murder anyone so no need to repent. He killed two people. One by accident in what he thought was self defense and the other by self defense. Did you lie here just to make him into a douchebag?

reply

Disagree. Those "70's" movies that you mentioned would at least have a compelling script...or at least one that doesn't make a mockery of your sensibilities (not including "the French Connection" which was ridiculous in my opinion. Can't understand how it won so many awards).

This movie was BS. Plain and simple. Just to let you know by comparison, I thought that "Inside Llewyn Davis" was genius. Just so you know that I can appreciate Oscar Isaac and movies that use considerable symbolism and innuendo. "Mojave" was trite junk. Plain and simple.

The whole movie seemed forced and altogether implausible.

That is so true, thumbs up.

No, you are absolutely incorrect, Mojave sucked. I was looking forward to it ever since I heard about it, it is my type of film and I loved the plot. However, I thought the dialogue was pretty poor at times and I was left just shrugging at the screen, what a mediocre film. Look at films from the 70s: The French Connection 1 & 2, Dirty Harry, Sorcerer, Rolling Thunder, etc. All are great slow burns and are fantastic films, Mojave should not even be mentioned along with those and many more from that classic era.

Oh, by the way, before you tell me to go watch Transformers, my favorite film this year so far is Green Room (Great slow burn thriller) and last year was The Gift and Bone Tomahawk (Two more great slow burns).

It certainly is an old school poor film.

It's that man again!!

reply

It wouldn't say it was great but i liked it. The film definitely had an old school noir-ish thriller vibe that was a breath of fresh air from the standard modern Hollywood tripe.
