This movie was horrible

No real story, the same tired "woman terrorized in house by supernatural" sub-genre. Whatever happened to the classics that had character development, intelligent dialogue, and story, like The Exorcist and The Omen?

I can't believe critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it almost a 100%. This movie sucked.

I'm really not sure what the appeal of this movie is. It did not represent it's genre very well.

Fully agree. I keep wondering what others see in it.

I think it's a beautifully crafted exploration of the nature of grief, and how trauma, if left unchecked, can destroy ourselves and the people we love. I think it's amazing how the movie had us sympathize with a single mother early on, only to flip the narrative and reveal her to be an abusive parent who resents her child, in part because of the related loss of her husband. We realize that this is what the child has been dealing with this whole time. And finally in the climax, she comes to terms with it. And in the epilogue we see her doing her best to manage her grief while being a better mother for her child.

It's a shame that OP and others I supposed just kinda dismissed this as a generic "woman terrorized in house by supernatural" story. But I guess a lot of people missed the point. I remember someone at work asking me like, the ending was so weird, why is she feeding the monster in the basement now? I'm like uh...it's not literally a supernatural monster.

Thanks. Maybe I'll have to take another look.
