The IMDb score is way too low.

It's currently a 6.8. It should be at least a 7.5. Great performance from the lead, nicely shot, doesn't drag, excellent tone and memorable.

Horror movies never do get high ratings on IMDB though. you will find not many above that 7 threshold unless it's Halloween or Exorcist. the low 7s to high 6s most are at

reply

This one is a well-acted visual feast. It deserves at least a 7.5.

reply

I just watched it and thought it was absolutely horrible. A 6.8 is way too kind.

reply

that's because you have a shit taste in horror movies.

reply

Yes, that must be it. The Exorcist, The Omen, The Thing, Psycho, Rosemary's Baby, The Shining, are all shit, I suppose. What's your idea of a great horror movie? This Tim Burton-inspired piece of shit? Edward Scissorhands in a top hat?

reply

Oh, you like the classics? How special of you. A true connoisseur.

reply

Sorry if that upsets you, but yes, those are real horror movies.

reply

Rosemary's Baby? I always found that movie boring, after just one watch.

reply

I think 6.8 is about right

reply

I agree. I see a few well made modern horror movies such as this, It Follows, The Autopsy of Jane Doe and The VVitch. They bring something a bit different to the table, have good acting, cinematography and some good scares but they all fall below the 7 rating. I think they should all be higher personally.

reply

This deserves an 8 out of 10. It's a really underrated movie, especially with how it shows the child dealing with multiple traumas from his deceased dad and the Babadook haunting his family.

reply

The only main complaint that I hear from people is that the kid is annoying. Assuming it's true, I don't think it's enough to average a 6.8.

The kid is annoying. The kid's supposed to be annoying. He's a difficult kid. His own mother struggles to like him. They're both dealing with, and separated by, an unspoken grief. That's the whole point of the f--king film: she doesn't like her own child. If we didn't see that the kid wasn't annoying, the film wouldn't make much emotional sense. That said, I can kind of see why people would be so irritated by the kid that they'd just be thrown out of the story. He is super-annoying.

It's a 5/5 for me, by the way. One of my favourite films of the last decade. Kent's follow-up The Nightingale is also a 5/5. I love the way she plays with genre. Can't wait for her next feature.

reply

I don't disagree that the kid was annoying, but it seems to be the only negative thing brought up about the film.

reply

Yeah. I see the complaint a lot too. To me, it's like disliking Friday the 13th because Jason murders people. But each to their own.

reply

I agree. For me, this is an 8/10.
