Why didn't she defend her thesis?

I think that would've been a great opportunity to say something like she was tired of the sexism and how it felt like a brick wall. That would highlight how much she valued David encouraging her and treating her like an intelligent colleague rather than dismissing her solely based on gender. (Adding to her attraction to him)
