Awful, awful lighting

Hey let's set up the lights so they shine straight into the camera every time it moves!! And we can wash out the image so the audience can't see the characters! Won't that be swell?

Seriously what is wrong with the director and cinematographer? Either they didn't notice, or didn't care, or actually wanted this...not sure which is worse.
