Lesson I got from this movie. If you want to really *beep* with someone appear to him as himself and tell him NOT to go to a particular motel. No reason, just let the mystery hang there.

That way, because there's no other plot device to drive the story, he'll go to the motel you just told him not to go to only because you told him not to go there. For all we, the audience, know up to this point he had no previous reason to go to the motel except the curiosity you elicited in him by telling not to go there.
