What I do not understand is that: Why did the older version of Aiden try and go into the bathroom to see what was going on? Wouldn't he have known that the younger version of himself he and the old man were going in there to enter the portal? Other than that I thought it was a very good movie.
IMO, in any version of the multiverse in which the old man exists the grandfather has been saved otherwise he would have continued on down the rabbit hole. So why help younger Aiden find the hole? To create other universes where grand dad survives is the only reason I can think of.
So why try to get into the room?
In trying to write out what I originally thought, I invalidated it. Damn.
What I found interesting about that scene was that they both went in but didn't come out in the same universe as only Aiden emerges in the one we follow.
This all assumes the infinite multiverse theory which is the only way I can make this work. And even then Aiden has to be assuming it is a diverging pathways scenario otherwise he is smart enough to realize that the outcome he wants already exists in an infinite number of universes. This is consistent with the diagram he draws near the middle of the film.
But as to your original question, sorry thought I had an answer but now I just have more questions.
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed. Say something once, why say it again?
