I thought of DOC HOLLYWOOD

Small town charm and local love luring big city doctor?

reply

I was just thinking the same thing. Especially when someone ask if anyone had seen the original. Apparently there's another original, made after Doc Hollywood, that is considered the original.

But what the hell. At least it isn't like Lawnmower Man.

reply

Yes this has doc Hollywood written all over it though it is no match as that was a much better piece of footage i.m.h.o.

reply

It owes an awful lot to Local Hero.

And doesn't anyone else remember Northern Exposure ?

reply

Northern Exposure. Doc can't leave, grows to love the town.

Damn I miss Northern Exposure.

Yes, I agree about Local Hero. Not sure this film was quite as genuinely charming though, nor with as satisfactory a conclusion.

****spoiler alert*****

Like, the oddly obtuse(cocaine using) doctor gets played and then rewards his deceptors with what they wanted anyway. And the bribe-taking, environmentally indifferent petroleum company gets what they want too.

obtuse(cocaine using)
I've known quite a few cocaine users who were anything but obtuse. And who were perfectly functional.

Personally I think that plots can be re-used several times before they get overused. (Except for sequels, prequels, recastquels, etc.) It's only when the plot is used again and again and again, and steals on a micro-level from its siblings, that I get annoyed.

The old me would get irritated when someone shouted out, "Doc Hollywood" if I mentioned Grand Seduction. The new me just sees it as a conversational starting point. Or rather would be a starting point, if I remembered Doc Hollywood better.
