Saw it at TIFF last night. Hilarious!

I'm a fan of the original French film, so I was wary of a new adaptation, but I attended the gala last night in Toronto...and it was a great film! The theatre was packed, and everyone (including me) laughed so hard at many scenes that I think we may have missed bits of dialogue. It was really well done.

I was also very pleasantly surprised by Taylor Kitsch. Before the movie began, director Don McKellar introduced him by saying that Kitsch gave such a charming and funny performance that he'll "never need to act in front of a green screen again" if he doesn't want to...and that was so true. He was pitch perfect opposite Brendan Gleeson and Gordon Pinsent (both of whom were laugh-out-loud funny in their own right) throughout the entire film. Really nice to see him in something so different from the big, overdone productions we saw him take on last year. He can really act! (Seems like a very nice fellow, too, judging by the way he interacted with fans and press on the red carpet. Doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes... Heh.)

Very glad I saw it! I hope more people get the chance to watch it soon, too - it's just the sweetest, most amusing movie I've seen at TIFF in years. Well done, Mr. McKellar and cast!

Very good to hear this. I hope it gets Taylor some positive attention. Looking forward to seeing it.

Reviews so far have been positive, which is a good sign. Being a fan of the original, I look forward to the remake.

Agreed. I saw it last night at the Atlantic Film Festival and the crowd loved it.

Just saw this a few nights ago in Dublin with Brendan Gleeson in attendance and a short Q and A afterwards as the movie is being released in Irish cinemas later this month. It is one of the funniest, laugh out loud movies I have seen in a long time. Some ppl have called a little Gem and I cannot disagree. Nearly every scene in the movie was just either smileworthy or just plain funny, the 113 mins flew in. Even the way the arrival of an oil company to their little paradise was dealt with was well done, nobody was actually glad it was an oil company but the reality of life, jobs vs no jobs, hope vs no hope and of course shame vs pride was well written. I am aware it is a remake of a previous movie but none the worse for that. BTW the place where the movie was based Newfoundland looked really beautiful.

Totally agree with you, though at first, I thought it looked a bit like a remake of "Doc Hollywood" (who was also a newly qualified plastic surgeon who falls foul of the law and is blackmailed into working in a small doctorless town).

The "cricket" scenes are hilarious, though unless you have some understanding of the game, they are likely to go over ones head. For the benefit of those who understand baseball instead, cricket pitches are not too dissimilar to baseball diamonds, and nobody could have played baseball on the pitch they were using.

A half hour in and waiting for something, anything to make me care about this ponderous bit of business. Nicely lit shots -- I'll hesitate to say pretentious -- and setting up a story without giving me the story while you've got any kind of the viewer's attention, is not how to make an engaging movie. I can tell it's a comedy because the actors make faces like they said something witty. I'm about to slash my wrists.

This movie deserved a better fate during its theatrical run. A wider distribution would have at least break even or make a profit.
