Interesting segment that didn't belong in the movie SPOILER
SPOILER
Towards the end of the movie there is a long, unrelated segment, which, objectively, should not have been in the movie, but I found it very interesting from a historical and human viewpoint.
The movie cuts away to an indoor scene in Berlin where a German surrender delegation of high-ranking military officers is escorted down a marble floored hallway to a large auditorium room filled with mostly Soviet high ranking military officers, lower-ranking military aides, lots of photographers and a few high-ranking American and British military officer delegates. The German delegation is there to sign the surrender papers demanded by the Soviets. After the ceremony, the three highest-ranking German delegates are served a good quality roast beef meal in a closed dining room. The three, highly depressed men have a empty, meaningless conversation about nothing. The high point comes when a Soviet military officer, accompanied by a Soviet enlisted man bearing a dessert tray enters. The Soviet officer serves the three German officers dessert, a parfait of strawberries and ice cream or cream.
