Ex Machina ripped off Ava's name from Caity Lotz in The Machine

WTF?!?!

It ripped off a lot more than that. But yes. That's actually why I came to this message board. Just finished seeing Ex Machina which I saw beause I loved The Machine. Personally I thing The Machine was better. The approach, philosophy and character development were all better. See both and leave your thoughts.

sunflower, same here. watched EX MACHINA earlier today and while it wasn't a bad movie it was just ok. THE MACHINE imo is far superior to EX MACHINA. i've watched THE MACHINE several times (in factr i just got done watching it again) and i loved it each time i've watched it.

The name Ava is commonly used in AI stories, it's a reference to Ada Lovelace, creator of the first algorithm. It's also the name used for a famous chat-bot which was written as an exploration of the Turing Test. It's a fairly obvious reference for an AI character name that has been used in sci-fi before either movie.

Well done for pointing this out, and swiftly debunking all the "Ermagherd!! Ripped Orf!" haters who haven't got a clue.

Yep, I just realized that as well.

Same title, same plot and even the lead characters have the exact same name.

Did these guys collaborate with each other or was some pretty blatant "borrowing" at work here?

reply

The latter, obviously.
