Self pretentious and boring

I didn't have high expectations to begin with. But just because you add this spider symbolism, it doesn't mean that this movie turns in to a mystery of some sort. The 90 minutes seemed to go on forever.

When I first watched it, I also felt the pacing was a little sluggish. Now that I have sort of decoded the hidden messages (also with the aid of some great analysis posted online), I started watching the movie a 2nd time and felt every single scene is perfectly executed. There really isn't any filler material going on, as every moment has an underlying purpose.

While I still feel detatched from the characters themselves (let's face it, there isn't a likeable character in it), I am still mesmerized by how brilliant the direction, acting, and execution is. The photography and music are also terrific.

Sicario is still my favorite film by Villenueve so far, and while I "enjoyed" Prisoners a little more than Enemy I can say all of Villenueve's films are near masterpieces. Enemy is one of those rare treats where the experience gets better & better with subsequent viewings... unlike... let's say... The 6th Sense or 10 Cloverfield Lane which starts to lose its charm. Enemy is FILLED with wonderful easter eggs!!! It's insane the painstaking detail the director went through... for very minor details that maybe less than 5% of the audience would catch. This is a "puzzle movie", so if you are apprehensive towards David Lynch's films this is definitely NOT the type of movie for you.

That said...

I do encourage you to give this movie another try (possibly after reading some of the detailed explanations). It's quite possible your opinion on this film may change over time. Even some of Stanley Kubrick's best movies took a few viewings for me to fully "get" the entire experience they had to offer.
