76th biggest second-weekend drop ever

It dropped -70.9% and that's with a holiday on Monday bumping up Sunday grosses above normal. That's the 76th biggest second-weekend drop ever. It's now likely to finish around $75 million U.S., $22 million under its budget. Foreign grosses will save it from losing money though.

Prometheus only dropped -59.4% and that was on a non-holiday weekend.

This means the movie failed to attract audiences on two levels. The opening weekend was anemic compared to Prometheus and this fast drop-off means word-of-mouth is worse than it was for Prometheus.

It was bound to happen simply for the 2 reasons you stated. This is now the year's biggest letdown so far.

Only I was thinking more chicken finger facehugger boxes (You can't use your hands to eat them at all), black goo milkshakes and xeno spicy burgers :)
