reasons why it underperformed

36m opening - way below Prometheus (51m), Fury Road (45m) and even below 2004s AvP (38m- although that was PG13 lol). And now looks like it won't even reach AvPs 80m total domestic - http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=alien.htm
on the plus side it cost a lot less than Prometheus (97m to 130m) is more favourably reviewed. Plus is #2 on the Alien worldwide scale (the others obviously not adjusted for inflation however) and still has China to come..

Anyway reasons are thus:
-not as much as an event this time (Prometheus had the anticipation of RS's return to SF for first time in 30 years for his 3rd SF film after the iconic Alien and BR. (unlike now where he's since done Prom and Martian was only 2 years before) And his return to the Alien franchise since 1979. plus at same time was anticipated as an intriguing mysterious original SF thriller that was rated R when PG13 was the norm and had that incredible trailer.)

-no A list film star this time (Prometheus had Theron. Fassbender not really a draw on his own as lead yet)

-audiences burned by Prometheus (which had seriously mixed reviews so the turn out was much less for the sequel. Be like if they made a sequel to Burtons Apes or Superman Returns. Or see Attack of the Clones box office drop after Phantom Menace or AvP2. Tomb Raider 2,TNMT2)

-The 2nd middle chapter in SF trilogies tend to make least BO (see Empire, Temple of Doom, Clones)

-audience burned by 'Alien?' (Ridley has said they made it 'Alien'/xenos due to fans sounding off about it on SM etc so its ironic to think that making the sequel into a full on 'Alien' film under the assumption that would equal more box office/greater audience satisfaction may have backfired somewhat. Even though putting 'Alien' in the title as opposed to 'Prometheus: ...' or 'Paradise' or even 'Covenant', and promoting the xenomorph in posters/trailers as a reaction to the Prometheus negativity would seem a plus, the last 4 Alien films with 'Alien' in the title disappointed just about everyone. also 'Alien' and the xeno denoted it was fully returning to its gory horror roots so in the eyes of the non geek audience with just a vague knowledge of the franchise who view Alien as just slasher films Freddy/Jason/Halloween in space it might've turned them off especially families/teens. and downplaying it being a Prometheus sequel might have inadvertently created confusion/turned those off who actually liked the more SciFicentric Prometheus)

-5 years since Prometheus (maybe the norm for Alien films but people are now used to only a couple of years if that between films)

-no 3D (unlike Prom - although 3D was more of a 'thing' back in 2012, not so much now)

-mixed reviews (again. like Prometheus. not an instant classic like Alien/s)

-overseas release a week before US (allowing everyone to know all spoilers on the net, the mixed reviews etc and think 'meh will catch it on dvd')

-fierce May competition, opening between established family blockbusters Guardians2 and Pirates5, plus King Arthur and Baywatch, and then theres WonderWoman -unlike August where AC was originally scheduled - really just The Dark Tower as competition. (Prometheus didnt have much in the way of competition when it was released in June 2012). maybe October wouldve been better for Halloween (but then would be too close to Blade Runner – ideally it shouldve been BR2 in May and AC in Oct)

-Star Wars (since Prometheus in 2012 Star Wars has come back in the biggest way possible and kind of blown all other retro space franchises away making them less of an event - also see last years Star Trek Beyond)

-Blomkamps nostalgia fuelled Weaver/Biehn starring Alien 5 (the excitement for fans seeing the artwork, Weaver/Biehn/Cameron even Scott saying its happening script is great etc, perhaps dampened enthusiasm for 'Prometheus 2' - esp when it was revealed it put the block on 'Aliens 2.' 'Aliens' really turned the franchise into a SF action series not so much slow burn horror of the original and it became more associated with that in comics, games etc and won a huge fanbase due to it. yet strangely the films have never really attempted another non stop action 'Aliens' with Marines/Pulse rifles vs hoards of xenos, as the nefarious Company pulls the strings. Theres been half hearted attempts - elements of AR and the AvPs but nothing like a proper effort..and when Ridley returned he's building on the mystery of the Space Jockey and the alien origins..not so much military action stuff/xeno army. So when Blomkamp showed he was planning a return to all that fans were understandably pumped..only for Covenant to take it away..- in fact it would appear the positive fan reaction to Alien 5 helped prompt Scott/Fox to really up the xeno action in Covenant as stated above)

Prometheus had mixed reviews?

That's not what I remember.

Glad to see the drop-off happened for opening weekend with this one :)

reply

negative reviews then?

reply

Prometheus and Covenant are both 'certified fresh' on RT.

reply

Rottentomatoes is your source? Is this sarcasm?

Do you really think 3D had an effect on the opening weekend? I will admit I liked having the option to see it in 3D but I don't think anyone cares at this point

reply

I personally don't care about 3-D at all but i'm sure most people would have liked the option with this movie. Even so I don't think that was why it underperformed. The reviews have been mixed and the series hasn't been that good since 1986 anyway so I think people decided to stay away for those 2 reasons.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/fyYgj2Fpur0

not really its just a minor reason among the other ones there (3D was still a 'thing' though in 2012 which no doubt boosted Prometheus abit)

reply

Fassbender is as big a star now as Theron was in Prometheus.

For the record, RT rates Prometheus slightly higher than Covenant, but a fair bit lower with top critics. But both safely in the fresh zone.

In addition to no 3D, it had extremely limited IMAX showings too. Like 5% of screens it looked like. That shows a major lack of confidence in the picture, which no doubt is a feeling that seeps out into the public as well.

The big problem was running away from Prometheus, dumping Noomi and listening to the fringe internet fanboy crowd. If fringe internet fanboys had any power, Snakes on a Plane would've been a blockbuster. They do NOT represent mainstream crowds. The only pushback Prometheus got was from them. Over the years, many average, normal people have seen it and liked it, especially Noomi Rapace. She is the major part of Prometheus that makes it resonate with general audiences. And by taking her out of the film, they put themselves in the classic position of so many doomed sequels who replace or write out the original movie's star. They could have survived writing out the Engineers in 10 seconds, but not writing out Shaw. If she had been in it, everyone who like Prometheus would've seen this is a sequel to it and wanted to see more. I don't recall anyone who disliked Prometheus complaining much about Shaw for that matter. And they still could've thrown in more xenos for the dull-brained fanboy crowd.

And the host of the Oscars for that year who then funded a project which he and Charlize Theron starred in together.

I think you should explore other places on the Internet if you think it was only an unempowered fringe community who managed to get fan service from Didley Squat in A:C.

I've yet to read anywhere how Prometheus was a good story or had layered themes - it was just nonsense Lindelof stuff for Lost fans who got too many gold stars for attendance when they wwere younger.

reply

Then you didn't read Ebert's 4-star review.

"Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the origin of human life and doesn't have the answers."

reply

I read his The Phantom Menace review and so I'd say science fiction/fantasy isn't Ebert' strong suit.

Perhaps I don't need to find Jesus in other people's whims though - I can understand why some might jump straight on in with two feet first though. I hope it brings you peace.

interesting points..

Ridley has said they made it Alien/xenos due to fans sounding off about it on SM etc. but maybe that was more about the Blomkamp Alien 5, its funny/ironic to think that making the sequel into a full on 'Alien' film under the assumption that would equal more box office/greater audience satisfaction may have backfired somewhat

reply

It wasn't a panacea. I think we expected to see more xenos as Prometheus always seemed to be leading up to that. But they didn't need to recreate the whole space crew investigates alien world and gets bumped off by aliens plot yet again.

reply

I think they should have released the blomkamp's alien first, and do whatever vision he had with that (which looked really cool btw), then ridley would be twisting knobs in the background working on prometheus 2, which could still have a similar storyline to covenant, but Dr Shaw wouldn't be hung out to dry and no powder-looking engineers!

reply

Are you saying 5% or screens in total of 5%of IMAX screens? The latter would seem incomprehensible

reply

not really.

main reasons in short:
- yet another new team, that we learn about from the very beginning, just to be picked apart during the movie
- weak heroine in comparison
- the way ridley completely messed up the "shaw" situation, ruining it for all the people that actually liked prometheus
- david, a great suspenseful, somewhat mysterious, i would even say philosophical character, turned into a stereotypical idiot villain, which also killed it for the people that enjoyed prometheus
- those that demanded a "real" alien film also did not get what they want

somehow ridley managed to disappoint alien fans as well as prometheus fans alike.
