The Ending

Spoiler:

Did she give him her scarf or maybe allow him to take it there at the end? She doesn't seem surprised, when she gets the phone call in the car. Or did I misread that?

What do you think?

I enjoyed the movie a lot.

reply

No I don't think she gave it to him. I think she was genuinely shocked at the call. Such a sad film, his time with his grandfather was the time of his life pity the awful mother ever came back.

I have to disagree, I certainly think she did it on purpose (or allowed him to "steal it from her pocket") because she knew about his wish to follow the cat, and to go home to grandpa. She helped him. Remember the conversation with the warder who says that they live in their rooms until they die, for years and years and never get out. This made an impact on her.

I also got the impression that she allowed the boy to take the scarf. In the end, no matter how horrible it is-- It may have been the most soothing finish to the story. Better than living the rest of his life in an empty room.
