It's basically a Korean Edward Scissorhands they take him in and one jerk makes a lot of misunderstandings which leads them to see his true nature and they try to kill him. The main girl ends up having to leave him to save his life making a promise that she'll return and many many years later they meet again (though I personally think she dreamed it and it didn't happen).

Not dreaming because the boy is standing on the hillside in the snow watching the car drive away. You can see the healed scare on his cheek where she hit him with the stone. He's also building a snowman during the credits. We also was told by the granddaughter that she saw him.

It's a lot better than American audiences assume it is. The villain is over the top but you find that a lot in Korean films. Otherwise, it's beautiful and moving. A big mix of many genres and films.

As for the ending- The elder Suni didn't dream it. When she wakes up, his shed is still filled with drawings and plants and flowers and the light is still on. Someone had lived there for 47 years. It was the wolf boy. He never aged. That's a fantasy element, but we also learn in the movie that he was the product of a Korean Science experiment to build super soldiers. But the scientist died. (And he didn't seem very kindly like Vincent Price in Edward Scissorhands.)

When the old woman and her granddaughter leave at the end, we see the wolfboy watching them in the cold. If people stay for the credits you will see him in the snow building a snowman. (Something poignant to the story.)

I agree with the Edward Scissorhands comparison, plus a bit of Peter Pan towards the end. And personally, I like to think the now-old Suni came back later by herself and the two of them lived happily ever after (not just wishful thinking here -- remember, she told the county agent at the end that she was not going to sell the property). If you're at all familiar with Korean TV dramas, these Korean writers really know how to do bittersweet romances, don't they?^^

reply

Peter Pan! I didn't think of that one. It would be interesting if there were other 'lost boys' and girls roaming around. Products of the Government's scientific experiments.

I'm not overally familiar with Korean romance films, but I really like their movies and I want to seek more out.

You're right, Suni kept the property. I think she will move back there and live out the rest of her days. Because you can tell in the beginning that it was a bit crowded with her family. Cheul Soo is so loyal and loves her so much, he will take care of her until her dying day. Kind of like Highlander.

If her family comes to visit, rather than hide him, she can say that she hired him to be a caretaker, maybe say he's the grandson of an old friend, etc. A whole new chapter could be developed, like a new love story between Cheul Soo and Suni's granddaughter.

They did that in 'Hook' lol.

That's a good idea -- they can be together openly now :) Oh, and I just realized that Song JoongKi didn't speak until the very end, and I hadn't even noticed! I guess that's a compliment to his acting^

BTW, Song JoongKi had a good year in 2012 back in Korea -- he was also the leading man in a very popular TV miniseries (that's what K-dramas are). Can you believe he's 27 years old? Anyway, if you're interested in his work, you can check out that show, "Nice Guy" (aka "An Innocent Man") at viki.com with subtitles.

As for Park BoYoung, she was the star of a heartwarming comedy-drama called "Speeding Scandal" as a teen mother a couple years ago, in which she also had singing scenes, as below:

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try and check them out. I couldn't believe he was 27 either. What a handsome baby face.

Yeah, he didn't even have to speak his acting was so good! But I loved when did. :) Nice deep voice too.

I was the same way with the Korean film classic 3-Iron - I didn't even notice that hardly any words were spoken by the cast and none between the couple in love until briefly near the end.
