Surprised Hollywood hasn't remade this

This is a teenage sci-fi/fantasy romance. If you cast young celebrities in the lead roles, it would be a box office hit. I'm not saying it would be good (because remakes are usually worse than the originals).

Why would they remake it if it's not even remotely original and was terrible film in the first place?
