Very cool

This and Curfew were amazing. Would be happy if either one wins.

Agreed, these two were my favorites. Both amazing, really happy I got a chance to see these.

I would agree that it is a cool concept and has some interesting visuals. I just don't think it was executed that well, still a good little short.

I agree - this and Curfew were the cream of a strong crop. Great short films are often feature-worthy ideas crammed into 20 minutes. In a weird way I feel that Curfew deserves the Oscar because I felt that strain less, which is to say that there was ultimately more to this -- maybe too much for its length.

I would kill to see a feature-length version of this, with far more background for all the characters. I'm guessing the filmmakers here got a huge amount of visual whiz-bang for their buck, and I bet they'd have no trouble finding investors for the expansion (although they might want it redone in English for obvious reasons). Any kind of solidly done expansion of this would be an easy sf/fantasy classic; the ideas and story here are at least on a par with the likes of, say, Dark City.

I think you've nailed the one thing "wrong" with this film - it needs to be full-length. I, too, would really like to see that happen.

You could have a field day with that - more backstory for the photographer, the girl, the boyfriend, the collector, the other victims, even the machinery itself.

I agree - done right, it could be a SF classic.

I think it gets its point across in enough time, I think feature length would be stretching it. Curfew was the only one that I saw that could work as a feature.

They'd both be amazing as features, but I also think that they might lose something because there would be less mystery. I saw all the films again last night with a Q&A and met the director of Death of a Shadow, who was really cool.

It's sad that people in America don't get to see these kinds of movies. They'd rather watch Emo vampires or old guys trying to pass the 13th Amendment. It would be nice if they grow some cahonas and watch real movies.

You would definitely lose some mystery as the film went along, but you could more than make up for it with emotional impact. If we really knew the three human characters, the ending would be up there with Donnie Darko's. It brought a lump to my throat without knowing anything about them at all; if I had really known them I think I would have been reduced to a puddle.

Also, the filmmaker might be able to expand the background of his imagined limbo / afterlife and still leave it pretty mysterious. Which is to say, that at feature length he probably would have to expand and hence somewhat explain all the aspects we've already seen (the machine, the cards it prints, and so on), but he could let his imagination run some more and add bits and pieces that weren't even glimpsed in the short film. For instance: is the keeper of shadows alone, or are there others like him? There's a whole world that can be invented there.

Brilliant short indeed. The soundtrack at the end was also a surprising bonus. Would love to hear the whole story.
