Loving the Fashions!!

Especially Miss Mardle, and Agnes. They wore the rich brocades, tapestries, and embroidered dresses and jackets The colors were so bright, and the mid-calf lengths with tights were so flattering and so comfortable...I might actually wear something besides jeans and shirts...

I like the outfits as well.

This has to be the best-dressed period drama, Downton Abbey doesn't come close. Apart from the slightly incredible lack of ageing, I love how Lady Mae has transitioned from Edwardian aristocrat to flapper.

yes, gorgeous clothes! everyone looked so elegant - even the men

Even until the the '40s-the early '60s in many parts of this country people dressed to go out, even to run errands. Of course, it wasn't the glorious brocades and other rich fabrics that adorned the wealthy of The English Arisctocracy, but even my mama stressed the importance of dressing for the dr's office, certain other appointments, and traveling. She'd flip over in her grave if she saw how I went to the dr now--jeans and whatever shirt is cleanest and has the least number of rips! It goes like that some time...

I'd love to live during those times again, but then, I think of spending that kind of money on clothing, then that kind of time to get dressed to go out? Shudder!!! That would take a bit longer than dragging out of bed and pulling something out of the closet and running down the hall screaming for coffee!! Lol!!!

The fashions are great!
Another show with incredible fashions (at least for the main character) is "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" ~~ taking place in 1928 Australia. Miss Fisher's wardrobe is fabulous! I want everything that she wears ~~ and the looks and the lifestyle to wear them all!

You know what I noticed as I have gone back and rewatched Mr. Selfridge again? The women wore their dresses over and over many times! It was certainly different than on Downton Abbey, where we see the same frocks, but they do a much better job at mixing up the pieces. I guess that's the difference in the landed gentry of Downton, and the shop girls who work at Selfridges. But Rose Selfridge was the same, wearing the same things over and over.

They were all just so lovely, I cannot imagine the cost of the embroidery! I have (disgracefully!) meddled with embroidery and it almost ended up with someone in the ER!! shudder.....

That's a great observation! Good Eye, LovingBooks!

No doubt, Downton Abbey had a much larger costume budget than Mr Selfridge had. Although in the earlier years on Downton, they repeated costumes much more often. Mary had such an ugly red dress in s2, and she wore it constantly!

BAFTA should add a category for best costuming. It would surely win. The costuming is one of the pillars of the show.

reply

Agreed!! I never thought of that! A terrific idea!

It would have had to compete with Downton Abbey, Poldark, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Peaky Blinders, Wolf Hall, etc.

reply

Well, the Dolly sisters certainly were over the top. And I can't imagine anyone in that era showing their underwear in public. Even today, though I do recall one time in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 70's seeing a young woman in a bar wearing a blouse, nice shoes but no pants.
