Kitty Hawkins

Why does she have that little girl voice? The actress sounds normal in interviews. I can hardly watch her scenes because she sounds so fake. Is she trying for sexy?

reply

It went with her catty nature in series one. She was so snotty, jealous of Agnes, always trying to stir up trouble, and acting so superior to Doris.

reply

Youre right - I hated her from the start. I suppose the voice was to antagonize people.

reply

I think she was trying to sound sophisticated rather than sexy. Her family is very working-class Londoner, and this is her way of covering it up.

What I don't understand is why the writers act like she never aged. Even if she were 15 when the show started (which I imagine she would be quite a bit older, more like 20, but let's be generous and go with 15), she would be 35 by s4, and maybe not completely too old to start a family, but definitely old enough that either her or Frank could have used her age as an argument against them starting a family. Heck, Miss Mardle was considered too old to have a baby, and she was probably only in her early 40s.

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it- Aristotle

reply

To be fair they all aged unrealistically - Miss Mardle and Mr Grove looked like a younger couple in 1929 than in 1910!

reply

I thought her persona was designed to lure people in. Speaking softly and trying to attract people.
