What was the deal with the outdated technology in this movie?

Seriously, the son was actually talking on a land line at home? And nobody in the whole movie had so much as a flip cell phone? That tv in the dad's house looked like something from the early 80's. And when the father and son were discussing advertising, there was no mention of something like starting a Facebook page for the dealership. In fact, there was no mention of the internet, period. This must have been set in an alternate universe where no such technology exists or something.

I'm hoping that you aren't serious because it was clearly obvious that the film was set in an earlier time period. It was written in 1976.
