Ending and the last supper

A lot of people seem to be confused or annoyed at the ending.

From what i gathered the family were religious so the eating of the father could symbolise Jesus at the last supper - eat of my flesh and drink of my blood and you will live forever!

Thats what i took from the ending and the justification the father used to eat people! Then again, maybe I am reading too much into it!
