It's about the sound...or is it?

Like the title says, I thought this documentary was excellent except for one thing...the sound editing. Ironic isn't it? I found it extremely difficult to hear the dialogue whereas I had to crank up the volume then BOOM! as soon as there was a music segment, too loud! down went the volume. I had to do this throughout the documentary....it got annoying very fast.

But in retrospect, Dave's passion for real sound is by far admirable. I gave this a 8/10

reply

Yeah, I had the same issue. I mean, come on Dave; just because most of your tunes go from soft to loud in the span of a minute doesn't mean your documentary has to as well! Thoroughly enjoyed it otherwise.

reply

Thank you so much for your reply. I thought it was just me. So I guess I ain't crazy after all LOL!

reply

Wow, glad to hear it wasn't just me!

Watched it on Amazon Prime last night and was constantly turning the volume up and down, up and down.

reply

Thanks for your opinion. I was watching Olympus Has Fallen yesterday...I didn't finish it because of the constant volume adjustments. What is it with these sound editors these days? Are they mental or something?

reply

i think it would be great if there was a way to control the "dynamic range" of volume, or whatever one would call it.

i mean this kind of mixing of course works in the cinema where there are no distractions and the base volume is loud enough so you have no problem understanding the dialogue. and then - bam! - comes the next action scene or whatever and you can almost feel your seat shaking.

that's ok, in cinema it's working.

but when i'm at home, watching movies in the living room, when there are other people around, maybe sleeping already, maybe neighbors behind thin walls, i gotta turn down the volume so far so that they aren't disturbed too much, with the effect that i can't understand jack what people are talking.

so a setting or something, to compress the volume range, would be highly appreciated, so we don't have to constantly turn it up and down just to understand the voices, risking the wrath of our neighbors.

reply

It's almost like asking the impossible. One day maybe.

reply

Funny, I didn't notice it at all. I watched this streaming from Amazon (if this makes a difference). Normally, yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about, but I didn't have this problem at all with this documentary. Usually when I can't hear the dialog I would have to switch the sound type on my TV (usually the sport setting works best for dialog).

I just finished streaming it on amazon as well, and noticed this sound issue a few times. It wasn't overly distracting though.

I'm a professional in sound and didn't have this problem of yours. Maybe your sound card has some unnecessary options turned on?

reply

I respect you professionalism but when you say "sound card" you anticipate that I'm using a PC.... I was refering to my Flatscreen TV. Keep in mind that I don't have issues with other programmings.

reply

Flatscreens, media players, car sound systems, can have very moronic options for loudness too, but doesn't seam like the case since you said everything else was fine.

I watched it on my laptop and it was fine. Watched it at my old studio on very expensive gear and it was fine too.

Just watched it on blu-ray and experienced the same issues on both LPCM tracks.
