Do They Really Play On This?

What I mean is: in this film does the viewer see the artists actually laying down tracks? Or is it the usual thing where you see them miming and faking playing to recordings that were previously done?

Not only are they laying down live tracks, in some instances (Trent Reznor, Paul McCartney) they are literally writing the songs as the cameras roll..
