The Watch?

*Spoilers*

So Michelle gives Brian the watch to prove her story. So what's the deal with the other watch at the end of the film? I did not get that - any ideas?

reply

The watch Michelle gave Brian was the watch he sent back in one of his tests. The watch from the box is the one he wore back.
Yes this is a violation of simultaneity and/or causality, since there will be multiple copies of the same watch in existence at the same time. Of course they may all of them be in different quantum states which may allow there to be only one watch all of the time.

I think you mean - well replace "from the box" with "wrapped in the blanket".

An even bigger problem is she went back in time, and he went back to the same time to find her. She got married and had a kid AND a grand kid so she would have had to meet her "husband"(Brian) when he still looks pretty much exactly how he looks the day he goes back in time and she knows what she looks like.

It just doesn't make any sense.
For $30,000 I think they did a great job but they really should have come up with a different ending. One that is actually feasible.

First, there is only one watch.

As you indicate, Michelle (aka older Shelly) gives the watch that traveled through time, as part of the test, back to Brian. Brian then put the watch on.

Second, Brian decided to time-travel back to be with Shelly. He wore his watch when he did that.

When Michelle fondly took the watch out of the drawer, we know that the person she said she married was really Brian, and that Brian has since passed away leaving her a widow.

The others explained this but I'll try to do it again but in a way that makes more sense.

It's easier to understand this if you follow the watch.

1. Brian has a watch and inadvertently sends it back in time 40 years.
2. Shelly is sent back and puts the watch that was sent back in time into a box for safe keeping.
3. 40 years pass with the watch still in the box.
4. Shelly gives Brian the watch that he sent back as proof of her identity.
5. Brian sends himself back in time wearing the watch.

So it's the same watch but one version has "lived" a lot longer than the other. At the time of the experiment, older Shelly has two copies of the watch in two separate boxes. One version of the watch is 40 years old and is about to be sent back in time a second time and the other version of the watch is 80 years old, having already been sent back twice.

It's pretty convoluted but I hope that helped some.
