Season five mid-season finale ( ep. 10 ) thoughts

I still love the show but the battle scenes were interrupted by too many flashbacks and dream sequences. It was also tough to lose so many good characters but it was a battle. I hope Ivar dies soon since he's such a jerk. He taunted Lagertha for being a coward while standing on the hill without any blood on his shirt. I just wish the show had become the Bjorn show since he is a chip off the old block. Lagertha is also a favorite character of mine since she is a smokin' hot strong female lead.

reply

I guess if they were killing off several main characters and wanted each of them to have their moment, this was one way to do it. Sorta fits with the season so far, a lot of really great stuff with some random WTFs mixed in.

reply

I like Bjorn, hate Lagertha. I hope she gets her just deserts. She sleeps her way anywhere with anyone. They could get rid of Heahmund, too. I don't see any point to his character.

reply

I honestly don't understand your criticism of Lagertha. I can understand why some might not like her, I don't like what they've done with her character this year. But seeing how women in Viking culture had roles much more equal to men and participated in battle, why shouldn't she be able to sleep with whoever she wants? She is queen and it's not like she's committed to anyone. Would you hate an unmarried king for sleeping with whoever he wants?

Personally I'm more upset about being deprived of seeing the sex scenes between Lagertha and Heahmund. If she's going to sleep with him in my opinion they should at least have the decency to show it.

reply

eye, we see eye to
eye!

Plus, great warriors have great sex drives. Someone once said, "The man who won't FUCK won't FIGHT!" (Need I
point out that Ivar is useless with women?) The same applies to Shield Maidens.

reply

Indeed. After Astrid got kidnapped it would be natural to expect she'd take up with someone else. But given her history of getting screwed by an abusive prick that beat her, another that used her for her status and screwed her out of all her lands and titles while she was away in battle, not to mention Ragnar who left her out to dry after she had come to his aid by providing him crucial support to defeat King Horick by not helping her reclaim her lands while she was away helping him it's perfectly understandable why she might have trust issues. It also makes sense why she'd prefer no strings attached sex and shack up with an outsider who swears his loyalty to her.

I don't understand this Lagertha hate at all. In my opinion, if this show owes us anything it's more Lagertha sex scenes. I'm hoping when the extended uncensored versions are released for this season we'll be treated to that.

reply

Envy and/or intimidation = hate.

The anonymity of the internet appeals to weak, cowardly little assholes who think that expressing hate makes them look strong.

reply

I imagine that people who think Lagertha is hot, watch for the sex and imagine themselves with her. Yuck! As far as I am concerned, Hirst could tone the sex way down. Porn is not of interest to me.

I liked Lagertha in the beginning, but not after she killed Aslaug whom I liked better as she was a better mother, is the one without any assistance from either Ragnar or Lagertha, who kept the settlement that was Kattegat going during times of poverty and starvation, even tried to counsel Bjorn and Porunn, and presided over the growth and prosperity of the erstwhile settlement while Lagertha, who claimed to be queen of Kattegat, was off playing Rambo, and sleeping her way to an earldom, or was it more than one? When she returns, she is happy to take all that Aslaug had worked for and kill the mother of four of Ragnar's sons. At least one is still bent on revenging himself on her for that, and it is Ivar, the one that Aslaug saved from exposure until death because of his disability and nurtured.

It is a mystery to me why people who see nothing wrong with Lagertha sleeping with everything except the settlement's goats, can condemn Aslaug who was willing to be the second wife, since Ragnar needed more sons, and Lagertha could not give him any more. That was a reality of the time as much as Lagertha's sleeping her way through several partners.

But then I don't watch the show for the sex.

Incidentally, this series is based on Viking characters whose truth if they indeed existed, is lost in the mists of legend, so anything Hurst writes is as valid as the legends.

Heahmund is a pointless character. All we have seen him do is fight for whoever he can bargain with to save his life, and who can't control his sexual appetites. He is supposedly a bishop.

I am neither weak nor cowardly. If you met me face to face, I would still disagree with you. I just happen to disagree with all of the Lagertha worshippers, and I am intelligent enough not to use filthy language.

reply

Lagertha is hot, but she has overstayed her welcome on the show. She should be an old woman or dead by now.

The actress who plays her is getting worse with each season too. All she does is squint, purse her lips and speak in a monotone voice.

reply

Yeah, she has been trying to act like Ragnar lately when she leans in to talk to someone. Counting Bjorn, there is Lagertha, Floki and Rollo as the only season 1 main characters left. It's looking like at least 2 of those will be dead by the end of this season.

reply

It sure is, though my guess is that Floki has enough plot armor at this moment that he won't die. Hirst is just teasing us.

reply

Atreides, she has outstayed your welcome. She has not outstayed mine.

Let's say I agreed with your condemnations of her as an actress, which I don't; but let's say that I did. The role of Lagertha requires something more than facial expression and vocal tonality. The role of the Queen Shield Maiden requires, as well SHEER PHYSICALITY AND PROWESS, and Winnick delivers that IN SPADES! Meryl Streep and Jody Foster are in every way better thespians than Winnick, but they could not, right now, today, convince me the way that she does. The defiant confidence of her posture, the predation in her walk, the definition in her movements, the blood passion in her fighting: these are all outstanding, and a non-negotiable part of the role of playing Lagertha. Bruce Lee was not Lawrence Olivier, but Olivier could not have played the roles for which Bruce Lee was suited.

But the fact is, the condemnations that you made are not things that I see. For me, she has not declined over the years. To me, her acting is more subtle than you acknowledge and is at least equal to the task that Hirst's hack, potboiler scripts require. You don't like her. I get it. Follow your taste; but I think your vision of what it takes to play the part of Lagertha is too limited.

We do at least agree that she is incendiaryly hot. I congratulate you on your good taste.

reply

She is SMOKING and probably my favorite character left alive on this show. What I don't like about what Hirst did with her this year is he made her go soft. After retaking the throne by learning to play hardball like a man and forcing her enemies to pay the iron price :} she goes unbearably soft which will certainly spell her demise.

Also agree with you 100% on Winnick in the role. Too many people either under appreciate or are not aware of her real life badassery and precocious martial arts background.

reply

Dude there is no way Ivar dies. He is the most famous of all historical Vikings and lives to a ripe old age after conquering Scotland. You pretty much have to assume ivar, Bjorn, and Harald can't die because their.historical legends are far too large. Ubbe is probably safe too.

reply

The historical Ivar disappeared within five years of the invasion of the Great Heathen Army.
Just sayin'....

reply

What do you mean "disappeared"? The Annals of Ulster record Ivar dying in 873. His death is also mentioned in the Annals of Ireland under the year 873.

Regardless my point stands, he's got a lot of conquering left to do of Ireland and Scotland to make the name for himself as the most famous Viking of all time before he croaks. This whole fictional storyline of having him wipe out Lagertha and battle his brothers is just lame.

reply

If you assume that the Ivar of the Great Heathen Army was identical to Imar of the Irish annals, which I don't. Your claim that he is the "most famous of all historical Vikings" is dubious at best. This show has veered so far from history that I figure anything can happen. But yeah, I figure Ivar is going to be around for at least another season.

reply

True I'd probably cite Leif Erickson and Erik the Red as more famous than Ivar but his fame did exceed Ragnar. This show would turn into a total joke if he somehow died in this Kattegat-Lagertha skirmish before accomplishing the deeds that he's known for.

It was weak enough that they killed off Guthrum given his historical role battling Alfred.

reply

This show deliberately ignores Guthrum, he was a much more significant person and part of real, documented history. I can only assume that the now dead Guthrum is a different person, otherwise Hirst has written himself into a corner and everything from now on must be pure fantasy.

I didn't really care for the flashbacks and dreams, either, but I suppose the show's producers are trying to give us some new variation on a battle sequence.

reply

I agree--the pre-battle flashback scenes were fuggin' annoying. Someone needs to tell Hirst--and every other "creative" mastermind on other TV dramatic shows--that this storytelling device was new and different (to television anyway) about ten years ago (I'd say most prominently when Lost started doing it constantly). Now it's just old and played.

Also, I'm getting tired of the Floki stuff in Iceland, too. I hope he does let himself be sacrificed so we can be done with that sub-plot.

reply

I hope the Iceland plot will become a big part of the series. It's perhaps been a bit uneventful but I think the director is going somewhere. Here's is my theory.

Flóki is sacrificed to the gods and some of the initial settlers sail back to Norway. People hear of Flóki's death and this "land of the gods". One of the people that hears of this land is Erik the Red, who gets exiled from Norway. He sails to Iceland where he again becomes exiled forcing him to sail further west to Greenland where he establishes a settlement. Someone that was trying to sail to Greenland got blown of course and accidentally stumbled upon a great land (Canada) before arriving to Greenland. Erik the Red's son, Leif Erikson decides to sail to this land (perhaps in desperation because life in Greenland was so tough, there were essentially no trees or resources) and creates a short term settlement in Newfoundland (which he calls Vínland). Leif then sails back to Greenland (armed with resources) and inspires another viking Thorfinn Karlsefni to form a permanent settlement in Vinland. Thorfinn then has battles with Native Americans, as documented in Greenland Saga.

I think it would be epic. But we shall wait and see, perhaps the Iceland story just fades out and the series will end with the death of Ivar. But I hope they go to America.

reply

What you propose could possibly become a part of the story, but it sounds like a lot of preliminary exposition just to finally get to some kick-ass battles with Native Americans in Canada.

Personally, I hope they drop the Iceland-settlement stuff (or at least diminish it) and concentrate more on the conflict between the Viking hordes battling the English. Now that Alfred is king hopefully that will come to fruition.

reply

Vikings vs. native americans. It'll be worth it haha
