Ragnar deserved everything he got.

Prove me wrong.

He was a King. It's wrong for one King to treat a member of their own social class in such a fashion. It's why, in England at the time, most rival claimants to a throne were often mutilated and shipped off to a Church - to allow them to live out their days in peace. And why, later in our history, Kings and Queens were spared the more gruesome executions and merely beheaded.

It simply doesn't do to have the leader of another people treated with such indecency. All it does is galvanize your enemies against you.
If Aella had been smarter, he would have kept Ragnar as a hostage - broken him over time, and used him to barter when the Vikings eventually returned.

reply

You're arguing a different point entirely. What he deserved and what would have been prudent are two completely different things.

Like Jarl Borg?!

Yeah, he did. Can't prove you wrong on that one.

The greatest one who never existed lol

reply

Yeah, he did pull out the guy's lungs.

But I was wondering, did they have venomous snakes in 9th century England?

reply

Even if they weren't indigenous; many travelers brought animals with them to sell; dangerous or not. When you hear about lions, tigers and other exotic animals in Rome's Coliseum, you don't think they were acquired around the corner do you??

reply

The only poisonous snake native to the UK is the adder. I don't remember what they look like, so couldn't say if there were rubber adders in the pit. There are only a couple of other native snakes, which aren't poisonous.

Most of the snakes that were moving looked like various boas and pythons, which they certainly would not have. (But are usually very docile when well-fed, so less likely to bite one's actors.) A large, black and white striped California king snake was very noticeable for its coloring.

Actual legend sais that is how Ragnar died, after his army was defeated by king Aelle II of Northumbria

reply

As a Ragnar heir, i'll expose your lungs.

reply

Not even sure what you mean.
Since he orchestrated his own death and it apeared that Aella was quite bad at torturing (rather unimaginative and by Viking standarts not overly brutal) I would argue he got what he wanted. Not sure if thats what you meant though.

reply

Well unless you're autistic or something I think you know what I meant.

reply

Again. I was trying to find a polite way of telling you you where to dumb to get Ragnars plan. So there. There. I spelled it out for you. Happy now?

reply

Not particularly. I haven't said anything to suggest that I don't understand Ragnar's plan, nor would it be relevant even if I had. Perhaps I overestimated you, perhaps you do need this explaining to you after all.

reply

The snakes were not indiginous, but it matters little anymore. Those who made the film knew it and expressively didn't care.

I had hoped, however, that people understood Ragnar's last plot.
Mostly people seem to confuse everything with either Christianity or Asatru, which I must say by now is fairly unintelligent.

It's the blend. All religious beliefes; and none, which is Ragnar's final answer.

Around him however the struggle keeps going on, always about which version you believe in. Like there in the fantasy of the film, like here on these boards...

@ to xxhelterskelterxx

Ragnar and his people were ruthless cut throats ...they brought sorrow ,pain and death where ever they set foot .

Considering all the crimes he (and his fellowmen) committed ,Ragnar deserved a lot MORE pain/ sufferings than what Aelle made him go through.

even on a rainy day he brings sunshine to my life
