How was Eckert allowed to give land?
He wasn't king anymore, so wouldn't his handing the land over not matter legally?

shareThat was the point, he knew he was not allowed to give land. But Ragnar's boys, did not know that. lol
Ecbert had it planned put, which is why he gave the crown to Aethewulf. He did it for one last jab at the vikings, to die the way he wanted, and to give his family room to escape.
I agree - what a brilliant move too! And he played the "crazy old king" part well. He wasn't crazy or senile - but he had to be believable. I loved it.
