There are a lot of great Israeli films out there now (a lot of Netflix U.S.)
Above's "Beaufort" is great. As is "Walk on Water."
Also "Yossi and Jagger" and the moving sequal "Yossi" are wonderful and moving. They fall in the gay/lesbian film genre.
As does "Out of the Dark," which really incidentally is about two gay men, but more largely is about the idea of a young man from Ramallah and an well to do Israeli man falling in love over that great divide.
If you want to learn about Israel, "Out of the Dark" is a good tutorial about the different cultures.
Also, not films, but superb looks at the political intricacies are "Hatufim" the tv show on which "Homeland" was based, but it's so amazing that it's like comparing a cartoon (Homeland) to a Chekhov masterpiece.
If you want a taste of the intelligence intrigues and how everyday soldiers could get caught up and destroyed in the in-house fights between the Israeli and Arab political factions--that's your show.
It's hard to watch, though....crying is mandatory. LOL
Also "Ta Gordin" or "The Gordin Cell" is a good tv series about sleeper agents from Russia settling in Israel. It's not the masterpiece "Hatufim" is, but it's a good look at the difficulties of being a Russian immigrant in today's Israel.
If you have Netflix/U.S., check there for Israeli films and tv shows. They add more all the time....
